Health Information Technology (HIT) is a discipline at the intersection of Computer Sciences, Health Information Management, and Health Care Sciences. It provides the umbrella framework to describe the comprehensive management of health information across computerized systems and its secure meaningful exchange among consumers, providers, government and quality entities, and insurers. The mission of the department is to teach and investigate using information technology to collect, analyze, monitor, maintain and report health data. HIT tools include computers, and algorithms clinical guidelines, formal medical ontologies and coding systems. It is applied to the areas of medical nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, public health, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.
