This hospital was founded in 1992 (1371 in the Iranian calendar) by a group of philanthropists, including Ayatollah Qarabaghi, the representative of the people of West Azerbaijan Province. It was established on a 2,273-square-meter plot of land with an allocated budget of 22.7 billion Rials, under the name of Seyyed al-Shohada (A.S.) Hospital. However, due to a lack of funding and certain challenges, the project was left incomplete for years.
Fortunately, after 17 years of anticipation by the people of the province, the promise came true. In October 2009 (Mehr 1388), the hospital was officially inaugurated with a license and ongoing supervision by the Treatment Supervision Office of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education.
This public hospital began operating with a 10,000-square-meter infrastructure, spread across six floors, equipped with 153 beds and a staff of 437. The hospital departments include three operating rooms, intensive care units, four main wards (CCU, internal medicine for men, women’s, and pediatrics), angiography, emergency, radiology, and outpatient clinics. Its development was made possible through a donation of 1 billion Rials from a local benefactor, and its funding was approved by the government during the first presidential visit to the province, using both national and provincial resources.
Today, this hospital is considered one of the most advanced and well-equipped specialized medical centers in the northwest of the country. With its establishment, the Taleghani and Imam Khomeini heart centers in Urmia now function as emergency heart care units.
It is expected that within the next 10 years, the cardiology department of Seyyed al-Shohada Hospital in Urmia will reach international standards and play a significant role in promoting cardiovascular health. The goal is to become a leading center for various types of cardiac surgeries in the northwest region of Iran.
